Take a better source photo
- Place the product on a plain, light surface, like a sheet of white paper.
- Use soft, even light so there are few hard shadows around the product.
- Keep the whole product in frame and shoot from a little further away than you think.
- Hold the camera level and use the highest resolution your phone offers.
Flat lay steps
- Smooth the garment and remove wrinkles, for example by steaming or ironing it.
- Lay it flat on a plain, light surface in even light, such as near a window.
- Shoot from directly above, with the phone parallel to the surface.
- Keep the whole garment in frame with some margin around it.
White clothes on a white surface
When the clothing is almost the same color as the background, any tool has trouble finding the edge. For white or very light items, shoot on a slightly darker plain surface, such as light grey, then let the tool replace it with pure white. Click the background in the original photo if some of the surface remains.
Questions
Can I use this for clothes on a hanger or a mannequin?
It works best on flat lay photos and plain backgrounds. Items on a hanger or mannequin in front of a busy background are harder, so use a plain wall behind them.
Why are my edges slightly dark?
Shadows next to the garment can look like part of it. Use softer light, raise Edge trim and check the preview.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs on your device, and the tool does not download any extra files to process your photo.
Does it work with any background?
It works best when the product sits on a plain or softly shaded background. Busy backgrounds, like patterned fabric or wood grain, are hard. If some background is left, raise the tolerance or click it in the original photo to pick its color.
Will Amazon accept the photo?
The tool makes the background pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255) and sizes the product to fill the frame, which are the main rules for Amazon's main image. Acceptance still depends on your photo and category, so check Amazon's current guidelines.
What size should I choose for Etsy?
Etsy's recommendations vary between its help pages. A 4:3 photo and a square photo are both common, so choose the shape you use across your listings and keep it the same for every photo.
